Student feedback is of growing importance in New Zealand classrooms, as teachers strive to make programs meet the specific needs of their students and reflect the learners own community, personal experiences and prior knowledge. Meaningful and relevant learning programs and experiences is what is being demanded from our teachers today. Student knowledge, perspective and understandings fed forward into classroom planning and learning experiences is a key strategy in Inquiry learning and fostering an effective class culture and learning environment. Optivote response solutions are an an effective tool in gathering this information, in formative and summative contexts.
Using Optivote the teacher is able to achieve 100% participation and engagement from their students, the teacher is able to immediately share findings with their students and participation can be anonymous and a non threatening experience for all involved. Excellent for: generating discussion, gaining group consensus, and sharing community beliefs. Gaining this kind of information is very useful when wanting a class or group perspective, or when seeking a totally honest response or opinion, for example, when evaluating a “Shared book” or when wanting to discover a major perspective or understanding when beginning a new topic. Optivote can graphically show shifts in opinion, understanding, and perspective at the evaluation or benchmark stages. Providing evidence of learning, and growth in understanding.
Optivote is an effective tool in summative classroom contexts as well. The teacher can choose to know and record how each student responded to each question and use this information to track and report on an individual students or groups. The teacher is able to instantly group their students based on answers given by the students. Understanding can be readily and regularly checked, improving the learning pace for many students, and enables fine tuning of the teaching content for the teacher. The teacher is able to achieve greater flexibility and learning programs becomes student driven. Beyond the classroom, Optivote is an effective way for schools to gain and share perspectives, opinions, and information, for parents, BOT’s and the community.
Optivote allows teachers to ask questions and gather students' responses at anytime throughout the school day. Advantages for teachers are numerous i.e. results are instantly gained, can be printed and recorded, very little preparation required (sometimes none at all), can be used spontaneously in any learning experience, achieves full student participation, and learners find them a fun and non threatening way to achieve voice in the classroom!
